Abstract

Four different clones of Phalaenopsis PLBs (protocorm-like bodies) were regenerated from long term-cultured PLBs to observe abnormal plantlets affected by clones and culture periods. Among four clones, P. ¢¥No. 12¢¥cultured for the longest period to proliferate resulted in highest percentages of abnormal plantlet (76.3%). P. ¢¥No. 4¢¥cultured for the shortest period to proliferate (12.7 months) showed relatively high percentages of abnormal plantlet as compared to other clones. These results indicated that abnormal plantlets of Phalaenopsis were affected by clones and culture periods. Under SEM, differences in leaf surface and root of normal and abnormal plantlets were observed. In abnormal leaves, epidermal cells were irregulary arranged and the stomata and papillae were undeveloped. Abnormal roots were rumped and showed little root haires.
